I just got back from a month long trip to Chicago and I’d like to share a few inspirational takeaways that I encountered.
Performing with The Scissors
The reason for my travels was a musical one. My old group, The Scissors got back together for one night only! In doing so, we were able to record and release a brand new song and see a lot of great people gather in the same room to celebrate. I had missed this process and gained some excitement to keep writing music in the future.
Combined No Hitter
Immediately after getting off the plane, we headed to Wrigley Field. I just couldn’t wait to get back into the friendly confines. As luck would have it, we entered into the ballpark to witness a combined no hitter! WOW, what a homecoming. The 18th no hitter in franchise history and the first at Wrigley since 1972! Witnessing that level of achievement absolutely inspired me.
Graceland Cemetery
My location in the city could not have been more perfect. I’m a big fan of history and Graceland Cemetery (no relation to Elvis) is home to many prominent Chicago residents. Builders, settlers, politician, business people, sports heroes and so much more can be found resting in these peaceful plots. I walked here daily during my month long stay and drew inspiration from so many who left their mark on the world we live in today.
My brother to the rescue
Who knew a flat tire could be inspiring. In classic Chicago style, a big old screw became lodged in the tire of our car in the first week. My brother drove over two hours after a loooong day at work to jack up that old car, remove the screw, and plug the tire!
We decided to look at this challenge as a gift. The flat tire gave us more time to be together.
Vertigo in 70mm
My favorite film of all time “Vertigo” just happened to be playing at my favorite movie theatre in Chicago, The Music Box. I got to see it with my favorite cinephiles and my podcast co-host Patrick. This is the first film I saw in high school that opened my eyes to movies as an art form in addition to entertainment.
Riot Fest and Punk Rock and Paintbrushes
While in town, Riot Fest was happening. I was able to swing by Punk Rock and Paintbrushes and see my art on tour celebrating the final NOFX shows ever!
A big bonus was witnessing people in the crowd wearing shirts I’ve designed for bands. I also got to experience Cypress Hill perform after working together on some projects this year. Riot Fest weekend inspired me to keep working at what I love. Art in person is always better than scrolling through it online.
A visit to Fry the Coop
Some of my favorite work lives inside Fry the Coop in the form of branding. They’ve even got a few original paintings of mine on the walls at various locations!
We got to visit Joe (the owner) setting up a brand new store in Bolingbrook. Later, we dropped into the West Town location for a meal. These visits were a huge highlight for me. The sense of pride I felt for the work we’ve done together is immeasurable and I can’t wait to get back to work on more.
The Matches at House of Blues Chicago
It amazes me to see how art ages. WIll it be remembered? Will it grow? I got to witness the 20 year anniversary show for The Matches record “E. Von Dahl Killed The Matches.” Fans gathered for a sold out show to celebrate and everyone was singing along at the top of their lungs. The lasting legacy of this band is a testament to the unique originality of its members. Experiencing this event was a good reminder to continue to create with originality, purpose, and authenticity.
I hope you enjoyed this walk through my recent travels and that you get to experience some inspiration in yours very soon. Thank you! - Darren Vorel
